To control quality and meet our client’s schedules, BHATE owns and operates our own drilling fleet. We have both truck mounted and adverse train drilling rigs, support trucks, trailers, water tanks, off road moving mats and low clearance drills for limited height and indoor work. We do angle drilling and are specialists in karstic and sinkhole prone geologic formation.

  • BHATE has the capabilities to drill by either flighted auger or rotary wash or air methods
    and soil sample by standard penetration test, pitcher tube, continuous soil core or Shelby
  • We can core nominal 2-, 3.5- and 4-inch diameter rock samples by wireline methods.
  • We routinely install two- and four-inch groundwater monitoring wells, multiple cased
    telescope wells, and slope inclinometers and nested piezometers.
  • Our in-house drilling department staff includes a professional geologist and six crewmen
    who include registered drillers in Alabama and Mississippi.
  • All of our personnel have met the training and medical monitoring requirements of OSHA
    29 CFR 1910.120.
  • All have completed basic First Aid and CPR courses and have current OSHA/DOT physicals.
  • Our rigs are capable of augering soil sampling in excess of 300 feet and can rock core
    greater than 800 feet.

Specialty services
BHATE specializes in a wide variety of non-invasive geophysical methods that can be used to determine depth to bedrock, subsurface soil and rock conditions, and locate buried objects such as utilities, drums and voids. Some of the services include:

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) - is a geophysical method that uses radar pulses to image the subsurface. This nondestructive method uses electromagnetic radiation in the microwave band (UHF/VHF frequencies) of the radio spectrum and detects the reflected signals from subsurface structures. GPR can be used in a variety of media including rock, soil, ice, freshwater, pavements and structures. It can detect objects, changes in materials and voids and cracks.

  • Structural Mapping
  • Utility Mapping

Resistivity- form of geophysical survey where electrical current is passed through the ground at regular points on a survey grid. Electrical resistance in the soil varies, and is affected by the presence of archaeological features. The patterns of resistance in the soil are recorded, plotted and interpreted.

Gravity Survey- measurements of the gravitational field at a series of different locations over an area of interest. The objective in exploration work is to associate variations with differences in the distribution of densities and hence rock types.

The Refraction Microtremor (ReMi) Method- provides an effective and efficient means to acquire general, one-dimensional information about large volumes of the subsurface with one setup. The method can be used to estimate shear wave velocity profiles and provide site-specific NEHRP and IBC Vs30 soil classification data. Testing is performed at the ground surface with no need for a specifically cased borehole. ReMi is useful in determining site specific earthquake response, liquefaction potential, soil compaction, and subsurface geology.

Seismic Refraction Exploration- consists of measuring the time required for a seismic impulse to travel from a seismic source to a receiving transducer. An explosive device, an air gun, a weight dropped from a truck or a hammer striking a steel plate is typically used for the seismic source and twelve or more vertical geophones are used for the receiving transducers. The choice of the seismic source depends upon the length of the seismic line, the degree of resolution desired, and the environmental suitability of a particular source.

The seismic refraction method provides information which can be used in:

  • Mapping bedrock topography
  • Determining the depth of gravel, sand or clay deposits
  • Delineating perched water tables
  • Determining the depth to the water table
  • Detecting subsurface caverns
  • Estimating rippability
  • Detecting shallow faults and fracture zones
