Auburn University

Auburn University College of Science and Math (COSAM)

This project consisted of two, four-story structures that included laboratory and classroom buildings. Total floor space was approximately 125,000 square feet. In addition, a tall, one-story, detached auditorium was constructed as a part of the complex. Maximum column loads were on the order of 500 kips. Although most of the buildings of similar size on the Auburn campus have been supported on deep foundations, we carefully analyzed bearing capacity and settlement and were confident the buildings could be supported on spread footings bearing on high consistency residual soil (saprolite) derived from the weathering of very old metamorphic rocks. The spread footing option was accepted by the owner, and considerable cost savings was achieved over a deep foundation system.
